These chicks eat a lot and sometimes I find myself waking at 2 or 3 am to see if they are too cold or too hot. If they aren't happy, we aren't happy. Our weather is not exactly stable so we have to prepare for anything. I placed a large piece of plastic around the trailer during a downpour. i was soaked but the two-day old chicks were dry. Today the sun is out and the temperature is beautiful. The chicks have increased their size by about 40%. They are frisky and bright-eyed.
Our turkeys are really growing. Donald has completed their 14'x14' pen almost. We want to add some rain-proof material overhead and add poultry netting around the outside of the pen. Donald said he wants all our pens to be multi-purpose for the sake of economy. Dressed turkeys will be available the week of November 12. Sales are brisk for which we are thankful. This is our first year for turkeys but with Hashem's help, Donald has kept in front of their space needs. When the final pen is finished I will post a picture of it. Donald has made a really sturdy, mobile pen!
We just picked up another shipment of our grass-fed beef from our processor and the marbleing looks great. We have lots of roasts, ground beef, stew beef and steaks for chilly Fall weather. Our herd is doing very well so far. We are a little concerned about the need for hay but that will work out. It always does.
I wanted to let you know a little about the two different inspection stickers we have on our meats and what that means to you. First, our poultry will be state-inspected, meaning that we can only sell our birds inside Texas. Our beef is processed in a USDA inspected facility meaning we can ship our beef anywhere in the US if that opportunity comes up. Second, the inspection stickers tell you know that your meats are professionally processed by knowledgeable and skilled people. We are very thankful to our friends at our local processing facilities.
